An Evening of Holocaust Remembrance and Education

  • Shaler Area High School 381 Wible Run Road Pittsburgh, PA 15209 United States (map)

In the auditorium, students and community members heard from survivor and author Yolanda Avram-Willis ("A Hidden Child in Greece: Rescue in the Holocaust"), generations speaker and Holocaust educator Lynne Ravas, Shaler Area alumnus and former refugee Iris Matijevic, and Klezmer violin specialist Christopher Sforza, along with student performances of art and music.

In the library and adjacent LIGHT Center, survivor Shulamit Bastacky, students, and leaders from the SNHL and Millvale libraries decorated butterflies in remembrance of child victims of the Holocaust, and read stories of empathy and tolerance. Children were also invited to create arts and crafts with the SAHS Art Honors Society.

In the lobby, Classrooms Without Borders and the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh displayed exhibits on the Wannsee Conference and CHUTZ-POW!, and students from SAHS Holocaust and Multicultural Studies classes educated the public about classroom projects focused on the Holocaust, genocide, and human rights.

Donations were collected for the Jewish Federation of Pittsburgh's Community Campaign in remembrance of victims of the Tree of Life Synagogue attack.

This event was free and open to the public.
